As an observer of education as well as student of education reform, I think this is totally insightful and true. "Formative assessment" has been appropriated by people that don't understand it very well. If done right, it could put the US in the top five in the world (Robert Marzano's quote, not mine.) I wish more people understood the point you are making here.

Standarized Tests have become a ridiculous part of the school landscape. These tests do little to actually prove if the student is actually learning a real skill. Unfortunately these schools are being held up to these standards based on a test. I myself am a part-time music teacher and I find far more value with a skilled test of what the child "actually did" rather than what they write on a piece of paper.

Hi, Anya.
I'm a big fan. I read DIYU in the course of writing my own book EDUCATION 2.0: THE LEARNINGWEB REVOLUTION AND THE TRANSDFORMATION OF THE SCHOOL. I cite DIYU in that book (I call it 'masterful'). And I just finished reading Generation Debt, which added much to my regard. I am lecturing this week at the Miami Beach Public Library's North Shore branch on the topic of DIYU. ED 2.0 treats the same topics as DIYU but concentrates on the High School. My next book will turn to the University, and will deal with the same themes as both of your books.

A couple of points of connection. I was once (long ago) a philosophy professor at Stanford. I was later an associate and friend of Ivan Illich. And I've probably read every issue of Fast Company.

Would love to connect (ljwaks@yahoo.com; leonard waks on FB; leonard.waks on skype).

Dear Anya: I've read your book "DIY U" twice and am half-way through reading it the third time. This is the type of book I was looking for last year, in my quest to seek free yet credited or recognized education.
People's situation in Canada is quite similar to the States: If you don't have a post-secondary diploma, you're likely to get a survival job and probably stay there, and tuition fees are too high and students end up graduating from university with the equivalent of a small mortgage.
I'm glad and grateful that you've touched these topics and offered some alternatives and ideas.
Cheers,
Tony

My parents are currently paying for my education because I can no longer afford it and I am about to have too many credits... financial aid cutoff is 180 credit hours. I transferred in with two degrees, I am continuing with only one. I now feel like the appeal letter I need to send in with my appeal form to financial aid has to be worded like an apology.

I need to apologize for going to school?

I am not sure what I am going to do about next semester if I do not receive financial aid. Seeing DIY U has filled my head with ideas and a new dream because I may not receive the degree I need for the job I desire... I want to help work towards making education... with an attainable degree... free.
