Dear Anya: I've read your book "DIY U" twice and am half-way through reading it the third time. This is the type of book I was looking for last year, in my quest to seek free yet credited or recognized education.
People's situation in Canada is quite similar to the States: If you don't have a post-secondary diploma, you're likely to get a survival job and probably stay there, and tuition fees are too high and students end up graduating from university with the equivalent of a small mortgage.
I'm glad and grateful that you've touched these topics and offered some alternatives and ideas.
Cheers,
Tony

My parents are currently paying for my education because I can no longer afford it and I am about to have too many credits... financial aid cutoff is 180 credit hours. I transferred in with two degrees, I am continuing with only one. I now feel like the appeal letter I need to send in with my appeal form to financial aid has to be worded like an apology.

I need to apologize for going to school?

I am not sure what I am going to do about next semester if I do not receive financial aid. Seeing DIY U has filled my head with ideas and a new dream because I may not receive the degree I need for the job I desire... I want to help work towards making education... with an attainable degree... free.

I heard the news about MITX today and thought of your book. I am glad to discover this blog. Here is the MIT announcement about this new online learning option:
http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/mitx-education-initiative-1219.html

There are a growing number of schools offering open courseware today. Now I hope we will see more certificate programs in the near future. Access to knowledge should be free. Of course, there are many challenges to becoming educated even if you can afford college there is no gaurantee. Today I just discovered new book touching this topic by Pier Forni "The Thinking Life" Read the review:

Keep up the good work Anya.
